"The image on the bar depicts a Tanala man. The Tanala people, whose name means “forest-dwellers”, inhabit the island’s heavily forested south east, between the coastal area of the Betsileo and the highlands of the Antemoro. This group lives almost entirely from the forest. Hunting, foraging for plants and wild honey as well as wood cutting, coffee-growing and the cultivation of rice in areas cleared with fire (tavy) provide the forest population with most of what they need. The Tanala practise traditional medicine, with certain healers able to identify the benefits of hundreds of different plant species."
